Alcohol, speed believed to be factors in Keweenaw crash

ALLOUEZ TOWNSHIP, MI— Two people were injured in a single-vehicle crash in Allouez Township Wednesday night.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched around 8 p.m. to US-41 near the north end of Cliff Drive. Deputies say a southbound vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it failed to navigate a corner south of Cliff Drive. The vehicle crossed the centerline, hit a traffic sign and soil embankment, became airborne, and rolled several times before coming to rest on the shoulder of the roadway.

The driver, a 49-year-old man, and passenger, a 48-year-old woman—both of Calumet Township—were taken to UPHS-Portage for treatment of their injuries.

Excessive speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Local residents who were passing by rendered first aid and summoned emergency personnel. Deputies were also assisted by Allouez Township First Responders and Fire Department, Mercy Ambulance, Calumet Township Fire Department, and Superior Service Towing.
