One dead, 2 injured in crash where driver attempted to pass ambulance

WELLS TOWNSHIP, MI— The driver of a pickup truck was killed when he tried to pass an ambulance in Wells Township Monday afternoon.

Michigan State Police from the Gladstone Post responded around 3:50 p.m. to US-2/41 near E & K Auto Repair on a report of a crash involving two trucks.

Investigation revealed a Rampart EMS ambulance with its lights and siren activated was heading west on US-2/41 when a Chevy Silverado driving at a high rate of speed tried to pass it. The truck hit a Dodge Ram pickup that was parked on the shoulder of the road, yielding for the ambulance.

The driver of the Silverado, a 35-year-old Escanaba man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and passenger of the Ram were taken to St. Francis Hospital with severe injuries.

Officials say reckless driving and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle are factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Troopers were assisted by the Escanaba Department of Public Safety, the Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Delta County Victims Service Unit, and Rampart EMS.
