Rangers recover hiker's body at Pictured Rocks

MUNISING, MI— The body of a deceased hiker has been found at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Rangers say Wednesday evening they received a call that a 45-year-old man had fallen unconscious after exhibiting signs of distress. He’d been hiking towards Spray Falls.

Officials deployed a marine response vessel to the area while additional personnel responded on foot.

Recovery efforts were completed near the Coves Campground. Steven Poppema of downstate Holland was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Steven Poppema,” said Park Superintendent David Horne, “and we thank our agency partners for their assistance in responding to this incident.”

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
