Diver from chartered boat dies at Isle Royale National Park

ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK, MI— A SCUBA diver has drowned off Isle Royale.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office received a call from park officials Thursday around 1:45 p.m. They said a recreational diver from a private vessel died while diving the Emperor shipwreck on the north side of Isle Royale.

He’s identified as John Nousaine, 70, of Superior, Wisconsin.

The accident occurred on the stern section of the Emperor, a 525-foot steel bulk freighter that sank in 1947. It’s the most recent large-scale shipwreck in Isle Royale waters. The depth of that area of the Emperor ranges from 100 to 150 feet.

The Sheriff’s Office is assisting the National Park Service in the incident, which remains under investigation.
