Hiker dies on Isle Royale

ISLE ROYALE NATIONAL PARK, MI— Officials at Isle Royale National Park are investigating the death of a hiker on Monday.

A 37-year-old woman from Battle Creek was hiking with her partner late in the afternoon when she experienced sudden medical complications. As her condition deteriorated, she was eventually unable to walk, lost consciousness, and stopped breathing.

CPR was administered but attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

Other backpackers in the area were able to contact Michigan State Police through a delayed 911 text, which was relayed to a National Park Service dispatch center.

Early Tuesday morning Isle Royale staff responded to transport the party from a remote location.

An investigation is ongoing.

The Isle Royale community extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
