Two injured in multiple-vehicle crash on County Road 480 in Marquette County

SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI— Several vehicles were involved in a traffic accident in Sands Township Tuesday morning.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 7:09 on County Road 480 near Cherry Creek Road. A 25-year-old Traunik man was westbound when he hit a patch of ice and went into the ditch. His passenger, a 51-year-old Marquette man, sustained minor injuries.

Shortly after that, a head-on collision occurred between a 19-year-old Marquette man and 60-year-old woman from Palmer. She was taken to UPHS-Marquette with non-life-threatening injuries.

A secondary crash then occurred between the 19-year-old and a 41-year-old Negaunee man.

The teen was found to be at fault for the crashes and was cited. Snow, ice, and speed are believed to be factors in the accidents.

Due to the traffic backup, a semi became stuck in the roadway on a patch of ice. It was not involved in any crashes.

Assisting at the scene were the Chocolay Police Department, Chocolay Fire Department, Sands Township Fire Department, Sands Township EMS, UPHS EMS, Marquette County Rescue 131, Anttila’s Towing, and Crossroads Towing.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
