UPDATE: Little Lake crash takes 2 lives, injures 3

UPDATE, 1/20/25: Forsyth Township Police Chief Brian Kjellen says as of today's date, the three Gwinn teens injured in Friday's accident remain hospitalized and are recovering from their injuries.

The drivers killed in the accident were Luke Kostreva, 21, of Negaunee and Jacob Haralson, 37, of Gwinn.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

LITTLE LAKE, MI— Gwinn Area Community Schools are mourning, following a crash that claimed the life of a parent and injured three freshmen on Friday.

Around 4 p.m., the Forsyth Township Police Department was dispatched on a report of a head-on collision on M-35 near Froney Drive in Little Lake. The drivers of both vehicles—a 21-year-old Negaunee man and a 37-year-old Gwinn man—were killed in the crash.

Three juvenile males ranging from 14 to 15 years old were injured. They were all in the same vehicle. They were taken to UPHS-Marquette. Two of them were transferred to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee for further treatment. All are now reported to be in stable condition.

Gwinn Schools Superintendent Sara Croney says counselors and support staff will be available at the Gwinn Middle/High School for those who may need them.

No names have yet been released.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the Michigan State Police, MSP Crash Investigation Unit, Forsyth Township Fire & EMS, UP Health System Marquette EMS, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette County Unit 131, Marquette County Central Dispatch and Heavy Hooker Towing.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
