Two extricated from vehicles following Sunday crash in Sands Township

SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI— Two people were injured in a head-on crash in Sands Township Sunday.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched around 9:40 p.m. to M-553 near Kelly Johnson Road.

A northbound Toyota RAV4 driven by a 72-year-old Marquette woman struck a southbound Ford Fiesta driven by a 57-year-old Gwinn woman. A witness says the RAV4 was driving over the centerline at the time of the crash, resulting in an offset head-on collision.

Both drivers were conscious after the crash but entrapped. They had to be extricated by emergency personnel. Neither had any passengers.

The drivers were taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Neither alcohol nor speed were factors in the crash. Both occupants were wearing seat belts and all air bags deployed.

UPHS-EMS, Sands Township EMS, Rescue 131, Michigan State Police, and the Forsyth Township Police Department assisted at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
