Alger County personnel rescue anglers dumped into Lake Superior

ALGER COUNTY, MI— Two people were rescued from Lake Superior Saturday when their boat overturned off of Alger County.

Sheriff’s deputies received a 911 call around 12:45 p.m. from a tribal fisherman who said a boat he and a friend were in had capsized about five miles northwest of AuTrain Island. He said they were staying afloat with assistance from debris that fell from the vessel.

Alger County Rescue 21, the Pictured Rocks National Park Service vessel, and the U.S. Coast Guard were immediately dispatched. Several other private vessels responded to assist, as well.

The Alger County Rescue 21 team rescued the two subjects, who declined any medical evaluation or treatment.

The incident is being investigated by the DNR Law Enforcement division.

Assisting in the incident were the Michigan State Police, the DNR, and the U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Division.
