One taken to the hospital following Houghton crash

HOUGHTON, MI— One person was injured in a two-vehicle accident in Houghton Tuesday.

City Police say it happened around 8 a.m. at the intersection of Sharon Avenue and Portage Street.

A vehicle driven by a 16-year-old Houghton resident was southbound on Portage when it stopped at the intersection. Another vehicle driven by a 71-year-old Laurium resident was eastbound on Sharon Avenue and also stopped at the stop sign, then proceeded through the intersection. It struck the vehicle driven by the 16-year-old.

A passenger in the southbound vehicle was taken to UPHS-Portage for treatment.

The accident remains under investigation.

Assisting in the incident were the Hancock Police Department, Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan Tech Public Safety and Police Services, the Huron Town Fire Department, and the Houghton Fire Department.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
