Escanaba bus overturns in Sands Township, 4 girls suffer non-life-threatening injuries

SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI— No serious injuries were reported, after an Escanaba school bus overturned in Marquette County Tuesday night.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded around 9:25 p.m. to M-553 near the county fairgrounds in Sands Township. Deputies say the full-size bus was transporting JV and varsity girls basketball teams home after games in Marquette.

It was southbound when the driver lost control on the icy road. The bus crossed the centerline, went off the road to the left, and overturned onto its side in deep snow beyond the shoulder.

A total of 19 passengers, including the driver, were on the bus. Four girls suffered minor injuries. Two of them, ages 17 and 18, were taken to UPHS-Marquette for evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries. The other two girls were treated at the scene and released.

The bus sustained minor damage and was towed from the scene.

Assisting in the incident were Michigan State Police, the Sands Township Fire Department, Sands Township EMS, UPHS-EMS, and Crossroads Towing.
