SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI— The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter partially reopens Tuesday, after parvovirus prompted its shutdown for more than two weeks.
The virus appeared in a litter of puppies transferred to UPAWS from outside the local area last month. The facility completely shut down on May 29 to deal with the outbreak.
UPAWS officials say the quarantine period has been completed, and all the puppies affected by parvo have tested negative and are doing well. The shelter is now preparing for a phased reopening. Starting Tuesday, June 16, adoptions for cats, kittens, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small animals resume.
UPAWS will fully reopen on Tuesday, June 23 with dog adoptions, meet-and-greets, and intakes.
Shelter officials thank the community for its patience and support throughout a challenging time. They say the team will continue extensive cleaning and sanitization efforts as they prepare to welcome visitors back to the shelter.
