Tax Credit for Tsunami Aid

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow is urging people to give to tsunami relief, and take advantage of a tax credit at the same time. Legislation recently passed by congress and sent to the President would treat contributions made in January 2005 as though they were made before December 31st, 2004. That would allow the donations to be claimed on this year's tax forms. According to I.R.S. rules, the benefit can only be claimed by those who itemize their deductions. Stabenow is also warning first-time contributors to research their donations or consult with a tax advisor, in order to ensure that the organization they've contributed to is recognized by the I.R.S. In addition, the legitimacy of an organization can be checked online at www.guidestar.org.
