Keweenaw Conservation Group Aims to Purchase Waterfront

Keweenaw County, MI – A Keweenaw County conservation group has the go-ahead to apply for a grant to purchase land by the Gratiot River.
John Griffith is the volunteer president of the Northwoods Conservancy. He says his group wants to buy 100 acres and
4,000 feet of Lake Superior waterfront, and add it to the land and shoreline it purchased three years ago at the same site. The Conservancy is helping the county write a trust fund grant proposal, and will provide 25 percent matching funds. At a meeting this week, the Keweenaw County Board unanimously approved moving ahead with the application. Griffith notes he's encountered support from everyone who has an opinion on the matter. Griffith says public access to Lake Superior is disappearing, and needs to be preserved in perpetuity. The application will be submitted April 1, and the conservancy should know if it's gone through in December.
