Marquette residents warned of phone scams

Marquette County, MI – The Marquette County Sheriff's Department is warning residents of yet more phone scams. In the first, the caller stated the resident's checking account was being cancelled, and asked for account numbers from their checks. The caller said he was with the National Verification Service. The second complaint involved a caller who requested checking account numbers for the sale of some type of insurance. Once those numbers are given out, the caller will deduct funds from the account, often without the victim's knowledge. Authorities stress residents should guard personal, bank, and credit card information closely, and not give it to someone they don't know or someone who has called them.
