UNDATED – U.S. Representative Bart Stupak wants to know more about the new Department of Homeland Security passport card. The card was announced last week as an alternative to the passport book, and would also meet the requirements of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Supporters of the card say it will be secure and inexpensive to implement, but Stupak says more information needs to be gathered. He wants to know more about the application process, cost to constituents, resources for implementation, marketing plans, technology necessary for use, accepted alternative cards already in use, and port re-entry without a card. By January 1 of 2008, the WHTI will require all U.S. and Canadian citizens to have a passport or other accepted secure document to enter or re-enter the U.S. by land border.
