City of Marquette plans to fight erosion at Presque Isle Park

By Carla E. Kinder

Marquette, MI – The Marquette Department of Parks and Recreation recently completed a 4-year erosion study of Presque Isle. Results of the study show that there are several areas on the island where erosion needs to be addressed. Parks and Recreation director Hugh Leslie says the area most in need of attention is that between the pavilion and Sunset Point. Leslie says the study by STS Consultants included several ways to combat the erosion. The city plans to utilize boulders to keep the wave action at bay, and rustic fencing and stairs to stop erosion by visitors to the park. Another plan is to enlarge the drainage system to accommodate spring melting and storm water. Leslie says the city hopes to make the changes by this fall, or next spring at the latest. He says the main goal is not to obstruct the view of Lake Superior.
