New Page paper mill plans to reinvest thanks to MEDC tax credits and abatement

By Carla E. Kinder

Escanaba, MI – Paper production company New Page will invest in equipment and improvements for its Escanaba facility, thanks to assistance from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The MEDC approved a single business tax credit and an investment tax credit totaling more than half a million dollars and Wells Township approved a tax abatement of $2.9 million. Kel Smyth of New Page says the company plans to invest $26 million this year and $55 million total in the plant. Smyth says the move allows the company to retain its 1150 employees and hire an additional 1200 construction workers for the improvements to the facility. He adds that construction has begun and should be finished by the end of October.
