Internet swindlers posing as IRS; offer tax refund

Undated – Internet users are warned to avoid giving out personal information via email even if the source looks legitimate. A recent email scam alerts recipients that they may be due a refund from the Internal Revenue Service and asks for Social Security numbers and credit card information. The swindlers use the information for identity theft and access to financial assets. The IRS warns that it doesn't ask for personal information via unsolicited emails. The agency says recipients should not open attachments on the emails in case they contain computer viruses.
