Environmental groups hold public forum

By Nicole Walton

Marquette, MI – Local environmental groups are holding a public forum to discuss a permit application to reopen the Humboldt Mill. Kennecott Minerals wants to use the old ore processing facility for material taken from its proposed sulfide mine on the Yellow Dog Plains. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is currently considering the application. Representatives from the National Wildlife Federation, Save the Wild UP, and Yellow Dog Watershed Preserve, among others, say they're holding the informal meeting to clarify questions about the permit. It takes place Tuesday, February 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Charcoal Room of NMU's University Center.

Meanwhile, the DEQ will hold a public meeting to share information and hear public comment on the application next week. It takes place February 18 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Humboldt Township Hall.
