Houghton receives stimulus money for road repair

By Abbey Kwiatkowski

Houghton, MI – The Houghton County Road Commission has received stimulus money for about a mile and a half of road. Funding was approved for work on 1.6 miles of the Pike River Road from the Chassell-Painesdale Road to lower Worham Road in Chassell Township. The project totals $450,000 in funds and includes crushing, shaping, and replacing culvert pipes. Of the $847 million dollars that was distributed to Michigan through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, only 4.6 percent went to rural areas while 1.5 percent went to small urban funding. The money must be spent by September 30th of 2015, and all projects must be let by June 2010.
