Undated – Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele has offered his support to a Democratic Congressman from Michigan backing an abortion-related amendment to a House version of a health care bill. Steele said Thursday during a stop in downstate Holland it's important that the federal government doesn't pay for abortions.
The amendment by U.S. Representative Bart Stupak of Menominee would prohibit the proposed new government-run insurance plan from covering abortions except in cases of rape, incest, or to save a mother's life. It also would bar any health plan offering abortion coverage from receiving federal subsidies in a new insurance marketplace.
Steele tells Michigan Radio he's worried other Democrats will remove Stupak's amendment somewhere down the line.
