Undated – A Wisconsin program that shames delinquent taxpayers into paying has collected more than $108 million since it started about four years ago.
The state launched a website in 2006 that lists the names and addresses of people who are delinquent on various state taxes, such as income, sales or corporate taxes. At first it contained only names of people who owe at least $20,000 in taxes, interest and fees, but state lawmakers later lowered the amount to $5,000.
Total collections topped $108 million at the end of October. State Department of Revenue spokeswoman Stephanie Marquis says that nearly 20,000 taxpayers who owe a total of nearly $771,000 million are listed on the site.
