County health rankings released

By Nicole Walton

Undated – The Upper Peninsula has three of the best and worst-ranked counties when it comes to healthy residents.

That's according to www.countyhealthrankings.org, compiled by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Alger County is 5th in the list of 82 counties, while Marquette County is 10th and Ontonagon County 79th. Keweenaw County was not ranked.

Among several measures that affect health, Marquette County came in first in the state for clinical care, Alger County, 15th, and Ontonagon County, 82nd.

Sixteen percent of Marquette County children live in poverty, while 25 percent of Ontonagon County and 19 percent of Alger County children do.

And Marquette County residents reported having 3.2 poor mental health days in the past 30. In Alger County it was 4.6, and in Ontonagon County 5.6 days.

Downstate Clare County was the lowest-ranked Michigan county across the board.
