Undated – Labor unions representing some state employees say Michigan should reduce management staffing levels in its state government work force and find savings from contractors.
Unions including the United Auto Workers and the Service Employees International Union presented a report Monday calling for the changes. The recommendations come as lawmakers prepare this week to take key votes related to the state budget year that begins in October.
Unions say Michigan's state government is more top heavy with managers than some other states. They say changing the manager-to-employee ratio would allow the state to spend more money on front-line services.
Republican Governor Rick Snyder is seeking $145 million in concessions from state employees for next fiscal year.
