Arts grants awarded across the U.P.

MARQUETTE, MI--   Six Upper Peninsula counties are sharing in nearly $5.7 million in grants from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs.  

The money is going to nonprofit arts and cultural organizations, educational institutions, and municipalities. 

Among other recipients, the Bonifas Arts Center in Escanaba is getting $17,000 dollars; the Pine Mountain Music Festival in Hancock, $7,500; nearly $15,000 will go to the Erickson Center for the Arts in Curtis; the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU is getting $5,600; and $10,000 is going to the Friends of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Ontonagon.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
