Marquette County historical trail wins award

MARQUETTE, MI— The Iron Ore Heritage Trail has won a national honor.

The Society of American Travel Writers Phoenix Award recognizes and honors destinations that showcase responsible, sustainable tourism, including conservation, preservation, beautification, and anti-pollution efforts as they relate to travel.

Officials say the trail was honored this year for the sheer innovation, ingenuity and a painstaking grass-roots process of linking former industrial sites into an exceptional, environmentally pleasing recreational trail.

They say the Iron Ore Heritage Trail took landscapes and waterfront deeply affected by human activity and turned it into a scenic recreation destination, while restoring key elements of the industrial past that shaped the region.
