UP groups get cultural grants

MARQUETTE, MI— Michigan Humanities has awarded grants to two Upper Peninsula organizations.

The Spring Grants award up to $15,000 per project to Michigan nonprofits doing work to support cultural, educational, and community-based public programming with a humanities element.

The Beaver Island Historical Society was given $8,800 to support its Irish Speaker Series. And the Museum of Ojibwa Culture in St. Ignace was awarded $15,000 for its project, Federal Policies and their Multigenerational Impact on Native American People.

Nearly 20 groups across the state received more than $230,000 for cultural programming.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
