Unused building to become new Marquette arts center

MARQUETTE, MI— The City of Marquette has been approved for a grant to turn the former Marquette Chamber building into an arts center.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation is giving the city more than $583,000 as part of its Revitalization and Placemaking—or RAP—program.

The project will rehabilitate the building at Father Marquette Park and provide a gateway to downtown Marquette, a new cultural center for the city, and a new regional four-season trailhead. Officials say it will give the community a centrally located public venue for a wide range of events that will significantly grow the tax base, contribute to the vitality of the downtown district, and reactivate a public space in the heart of the city.

The City Community Services Department will be the lead on the project, in cooperation with the Office of Arts and Culture.
