Marquette centerpiece sculpture to be unveiled Friday

MARQUETTE, MI— The City of Marquette will unveil its newest public art sculpture—Seven Grandfather Teachings—on Friday.

Artist and member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe Jason Quigno carved seven locally quarried boulders to represent each of the grandfathers and the teachings they offer. The stones will be placed in a circle at the entrance of the recent Spear Dock walking pier renovation in the city's lower harbor.

The sculpture will serve as the centerpiece of the City Shoreline Cultural Trail. Honoring the community’s diverse heritage, the trail will connect key sites along the city’s shoreline.

An unveiling ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a laser light show and musical performances.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
