Symphony orchestras receive one-time state grants

LANSING, MI— Three Northern Michigan symphony orchestras have received grants from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.

More than $5.65 million in need-based grants was awarded across the state through the new, one-time Symphony Economic Recovery Program.

The Marquette Symphony Orchestra was given $13,735; the Beaver Island Performing Arts Alliance received $10,977; and the Soo Theatre Project got $27,468.

The money can be used for renovation of music halls, instruments, musician staff, administrative staff, professional development and marketing and outreach to expand attendance.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
