UPPCO seeks rate increase

ISHPEMING, MI--   Upper Peninsula Power Company wants to raise its rates.

UPPCO has applied to the Michigan Public Service Commission for permission to increase 2016 rates by 6.45 percent.

The average residential customer using 500 kilowatt hours of electricity per month would see an additional $9.56 to $9.93 per month on their bill.

UPPCO became a new Michigan-based utility in 2014.  Officials say they need the rate increase to establish an Upper Peninsula-based customer service, dispatch and control center, and to invest in the electric distribution grid to ensure safe and reliable service.
