LANSING, MI (AP)-- An audit says confidential taxpayer information was put at risk because the Michigan Department of Treasury didn't always quickly disable computer access for former employees.
The Lansing State Journal says the report overall rated the department's corporate income tax and Michigan Business Tax program as "moderately effective."
It notes, however, that 15 of the 19 employees who left the department or were transferred between Jan. 1, 2012 and March 31, 2015 maintained access to confidential taxpayer data, sometimes for weeks after their departure. Policy requires the department to cut off access within a business day.
Auditors found no instance of a breach.
In Wednesday's report, Treasury officials said they agreed with the auditor's findings and had already implemented a process to deal with the issue.
