Auto industry would feel effects of border closure, official says

ANN ARBOR, MI (MPRN)--   Experts say the U.S. auto industry would be devastated if President Donald Trump follows through with a threat to close the border with Mexico.

The vast majority of U.S. vehicles use Mexican made parts, and millions of cars are assembled in Mexico and exported here.

Charles Ballard is an economist with Michigan State University. He says closing the border would also hurt U.S. agriculture. Ballard says it's possible there could be ways to block immigration without blocking all trade.

“It's good to hear that the president's economic advisors are trying to find ways to soften the blow associated with this, by maybe letting trucks come through but not letting other things come through,” he says.

President Trump may be backing down from the threat. He said Tuesday night Mexico is starting to apprehend migrants at its southern border and deport them.

Tracy Samilton covers the auto beat for Michigan Radio. She has worked for the station for 12 years, and started out as an intern before becoming a part-time and, later, a full-time reporter. Tracy's reports on the auto industry can frequently be heard on Morning Edition and All Things Considered, as well as on Michigan Radio. She considers her coverage of the landmark lawsuit against the University of Michigan for its use of affirmative action a highlight of her reporting career.
