Eagle Mine to operate longer than originally expected

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI--   Lundin Mining has extended the life of Marquette County’s Eagle Mine.

In a Thursday press release, officials said underground infill and extension drilling in the past year have increased the Eagle East Mineral Reserve estimate to 2.3 million tonnes at 3.2% nickel and 2.6% copper. That extends the Eagle Mine’s life by over a year to mid-2025.

The Eagle East ore body was discovered in 2016. Mining there is expected to begin by the end of this year.

Officials had originally estimated the Eagle Mine would operate until 2023.

Matt Johnson is Manager of External Relations. He says increased mine life will allow Eagle to continue to contribute to the local economy.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
