Survey indicates businesses across the UP affected by pandemic

MARQUETTE, MI--   InvestUP has released some results from an economic impact survey taken by 330 business owners a couple of weeks ago.

Business leaders from all 15 U.P. counties responded to the survey conducted by InvestUP, Upper Peninsula Michigan Works and local economic developers. The average business size was six to nine employees.

According to the results, 46 percent of respondents said they wouldn’t be able to survive more than six months if some reopening isn’t permitted in the near future; 68 percent have seen changes in payroll and workforce; and 50 percent of businesses have furloughed or temporarily laid off an average of five employees.

Comments illustrated a common call for the U.P. to be recognized as its own region. Most businesses expressed a readiness to reopen.

Additional survey details will be released at a later time.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
