NMU EAN allows Iron River business to hire workers

IRON RIVER, MI--   A call center in Iron River was able to add 31 jobs with the help of Northern Michigan University’s Educational Access Network.

When the pandemic arrived in the region Global Response employees had to find a way to work from home, but nearly two dozen employees found their home internet speeds weren’t fast enough to handle the work. Global response reached out to InvestUP for ideas on how to solve the problem. InvestUP CEO Marty Fittante contacted NMU.

While the goal of the EAN is to provide broadband access and educational resources to students—especially in rural areas—officials were able to make it work for Global Response. The call center was able to increase its workforce by 31 people, including some former employees who hadn’t been able to work from home.

The company expects to add even more employees at the end of the year.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
