Carney receives TEDF grant to improve road near sawmill

CARNEY, MI— A Menominee County town is getting more than $387,000 in grant money to rebuild a road next to a manufacturing business.

The state Transportation Economic Development Fund grant will be used to rebuild Guard Street near Performance Corporation in Carney. Performance Corp. manufactures wooden pallets, crates and boxes. Its Carney sawmill generates more than 20 million board feet of lumber annually and recycles waste product in the forms of firewood, animal bedding, and boiler fuel.

The company chose Carney for its upcoming expansion, but only if weight-restricted Guard Street could be revamped. The company indicated that without significant road improvements, they would consider expanding at their Wisconsin location instead, which would result in the loss of 52 jobs in Carney.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
