MEDC executive visits UP tribes

MARQUETTE, MI— The Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the state’s tribes are striving to create a stronger relationship.

The Tribal Business News says last week MEDC CEO Quentin Messer, Jr. met with the five tribes based in the U.P. as part of a business tour. He said it allowed him learn about their needs and develop executive-to-executive relationships.

He added the MEDC has a Tribal Business Development team and wants to expand it. The unit is often the tribe’s first point of contact to access grants and other programs.

President of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, Kim Klopstein, met with Messer last week to talk about ways to “help stabilize and develop the economy” for the tribe.

Messer says, "Every tribe has its own aspirations and their own views. We need to be thoughtful and respectful of that.”
