UPPCO rates going up

MARQUETTE, MI— The Michigan Public Service Commission has approved a $10.8 million rate increase for Upper Peninsula Power Company.

UPPCO initially requested a $25.3 million hike in September, citing infrastructure investments and associated costs. The MPSC order reduced that amount by more than 57 percent. UPPCO also agrees not to seek to have rates increased again before January 1, 2025.

A typical residential customer using 500 kilowatt hours will see an increase of $12.30 per month.

Intervenors in the case were Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office; Citizens Utility Board of Michigan; Calumet Electronics Corp.; Billerud Americas Corp.; Michigan Technological University; and the Association of Businesses Advocating Tariff Equity.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
