New Protolab debuts at Innovate Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI— Innovate Marquette has unveiled a new tool to bring clients’ ideas to life.

The SmartZone held a ribbon-cutting for its state-of-the-art Protolab Tuesday. It consists of 14 3-D printers that create working concept models for clients.

Eric Prue is Design Coordinator for Innovate Marquette.

“You can have an idea in your head, and with the use of 3-D printing technology, you can have that idea within 24 hours in your hand.”

The Protolab was made possible by a U.S. Department of Agriculture RISE grant.

Attending the ribbon cutting were Marquette Mayor Cody Mayer, InvestUP CEO Marty Fittante, Marquette Commission members Jenna Smith and Jermey Ottaway, and representatives from the USDA and Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

There are 21 SmartZones in Michigan. Innovate Marquette specializes in outdoor recreation, sustainability, and creative technology.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
