State business grant helps Sawyer-based company expand

MARQUETTE, MI— A grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund is helping a KI Sawyer surgical implants and instruments business expand in Marquette.

The $500,000 Michigan Business Development Program grant for Able Medical Devices is expected to create 40 new jobs and generate nearly $13 million in capital investment.

Able began operations in 2018 as a contract manufacturer of medical device implants and instruments. The company currently has manufacturing operations at Sawyer but has reached the facility’s capacity. The state grant will help expand its operations by constructing a new 30,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Marquette.

Officials say Able’s investment advances the state’s life sciences and medical devices sector, a key industry that continues to be a significant contributor to the state’s overall economy.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
