A new report says Michigan faces 'a critical time,’ needs innovation to retain $348B auto industry

DETROIT, MI (AP)— A recent report says Michigan needs to tackle risks to its $348 billion automotive industry to keep jobs and production in the state.

Glenn Stevens is executive director of the statewide industry advocacy group MichAuto. He emphasizes this is a critical time for the industry. The auto sector accounts for 20 percent of Michigan jobs and an $83 billion payroll.

The concern is escalating as Michigan readies for the Detroit Auto Show, which runs from January 17-25.

MichAuto plans to launch a roadmap this year to boost innovation and economic development. Challenges include tariff changes, new fuel standards, and competition from southern states and China.
