MARQUETTE, MI— A plan to eliminate blight and create affordable housing in downtown Marquette will take a step forward this week.

The building at 401 W. Washington Street will be demolished. It formerly housed Northern Hydroponics and has sat empty for years.

The group 401 W. Washington, LLC plans to construct a 16,000-square-foot mixed-use building with integrated parking, two commercial spaces, and 11 residential units. Nine of the units will be targeted to those who make at or below 120 percent of the Area Median Income. The City approved a Brownfield Plan for the project last year.

Officials say demo and cleanup should take about a week to complete.
