The Marquette Regional History Center presents the Special Exhibit:50 YEARS OF GUTS FRISBEE IN MARQUETTE MAY 13 - SEPTEMBER 7 In 1974 a Guts Frisbee tournament came to Marquette’s Cliffs Ridge ski hill. Thousands of paying spectators lined the playing fields. Guts Frisbee had its beginnings in the Keweenaw Peninsula in the late 1950s when the Healy brothers played at a family picnic. They then started an annual tournament, the International Frisbee Tournament. Soon folks from Marquette were driving up to play or watch and forming teams like the Queen City Flyers. This sport has spread around the world and is now part of the World Flying Disc Federation. Marquette players have competed as far away as Japan. Celebrate the origins, the rich personalities, and the camaraderie in this U.P. Sport. For more information visit marquettehistory.org or call 906.226.3571. Ironwood based singer/songwriter Bill Jamerson will perform an hour-long musical tribute to the early ski jumpers of the Upper Peninsula at Pine Mountain Resort to adults and teens. Jamerson tells stories and performs original songs he wrote based on interviews with many ski jumping legends he interviewed 25 years ago in Marquette County. Most of the stories take place in the 1930’s and 1940’s and describe the ski jumping culture at its height when teenage boys traveled across the Midwest to compete at tournaments. Following the presentation, there will be a brief tour of the Pine Mountain Ski Jump by members of the Kiwanis Ski Club. Meet at the top of the Pine Mountain Ski Jump, (UP Veterans War Memorial and Park, Kramer Drive, Iron Mountain, MI.) No registration required. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.--The Dickinson County Library helps the community find its story.
