Lechner found guilty on most counts

MARQUETTE, MI--   A jury has found one man guilty in a U.P. explosives case, while his codefendant will go free. 

Thursday in Marquette Federal Court John Lechner of Sault Ste. Marie was found guilty of six of eight counts brought against him.  They include two counts of transportation of explosive materials, two counts of improper storage of explosive materials, one count of possession of explosives under indictment, and one count of false statement to law enforcement officers.  He was acquitted of distribution of explosive materials and distribution of explosive materials to a convicted felon.

Lechner’s codefendant, Ken Kassab of Brimley, was acquitted of unlawfully transporting explosive materials and being a convicted felon in possession of explosives.

The case involved more than 4,000 pounds of a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. 

Lechner’s sentencing is set for October 18. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
