Preliminary exam scheduled for accused torturers

ESCANABA, MI--   A preliminary hearing has been set for an Escanaba couple accused of torturing a boy.  

Susan Bardo, 46, and Carl Pellinen, 47, are charged with first-degree child abuse, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, and torture.

Police found the 15-year-old boy living in an 8- by 10-foot room lined with tarps on the 1500 block of North 20th Street last week.  Interviews and evidence

recovered during a search led to the arrest of the boy’s mother and her boyfriend. 

Bardo and Pellinen remain lodged in the Delta County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond each. 

Their combined preliminary hearing is set for April 25 in Delta County District Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
