Deputy charged with assault given delay of sentence

WLUC-TV

MUNISING, MI--   An Alger County deputy has been sentenced to probation after he assaulted an inmate at the county jail.

William Carlson, 42, pleaded no contest Thursday to misdemeanor assault and battery.  He’s accused of attacking 55-year-old area chiropractor George Young, who is facing seven counts of criminal sexual conduct.  Carlson apparently knew one of the alleged victims in the case.

Marquette County District Judge Dennis Girard was brought in for the case due to conflict of interest issues.  He gave Carlson 12 months’ probation and a delay of sentence of 93 days in jail.  If Carlson completes the terms of his probation the charges will be dropped.

Carlson remains on administrative leave.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
