Torture codefendant to be sentenced Monday in Escanaba

ESCANABA, MI--   An Escanaba man who pleaded guilty to abusing his girlfriend’s teenage son is scheduled to be sentenced in Delta County Circuit Court Monday.

Carl Pellinen, 47, pleaded no contest to aiding and abetting first-degree criminal sexual conduct and guilty to first-degree child abuse.  The no contest plea isn't an admission of guilt but is treated that way for sentencing purposes.

Susan Bardo, 46, the 15-year-old's mother, was ordered to serve 20 to 50 years in prison last Tuesday.

Police say the boy rarely left a room made from tarps while being tortured and abused.  He was rescued from the Escanaba home in April.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
