Sarasin pleads in hostage case

ESCANABA, MI--   A Delta County man who was charged with holding his wife hostage and threatening to kill her has pleaded guilty to three charges.

John Sarasin, 62, of Flat Rock pleaded Friday to unlawful imprisonment, attempted felonious assault, and interfering with electronic communications.

This past July Sarasin allegedly pointed a pistol at his wife and threatened to kill her when she tried to leave him.  He hung up with the phone when she dialed 911, then kept her in the house for three hours.  Sarasin initiated a standoff with police after his wife escaped, but surrendered six hours later.

In exchange for his guilty pleas the prosecutor has agreed to drop one count each of felonious assault and committing a felony while in the possession of a firearm.  An habitual offense notice has also been dropped.

Sentencing is set for November 7 in Delta County Circuit Court.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
